This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725. These treaties did not implicate or affirm the surrender or transfer of lands and resources to the British, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title, establishing the rules for what was to be a long-standing relationship of mutual respect between nations. The Flaxmobile Project recognizes that land dispossession in this country is rooted in and maintained by settler colonialism and began with colonial systems of enclosure for agriculture. This dispossession contributed to the loss of traditional bast fibre knowledge and the erasure of Indigenous material culture. Flax was a crop introduced by early settlers and it is our aim that knowledge of flax cultivation developed through this project will also support the re-establishment of Indigenous bast fibres in Mi’kma’ki: Nova Scotia. The Flaxmobile Project is a three-phase research project that involves a mobile facility for educational immersion and fibre flax processing. The project is creating a critical network that connects farmers, fibre mills, craftspeople and consumers to explore the sustainable futures of textile supply chains and to address the material security gap across Mi’kma’ki: Nova Scotia. Fibre flax thrives in our Maritime climate; it is fully biodegradable, zero-waste, and the plant source for linen. While robust networks for local textiles existed in Nova Scotia until the early 1920s, present systems of globalized commerce, and a migration away from rural communities has led to the decline of these sectors.&nbsp; The Flaxmobile Project is encouraging the development of a local and sustainable fibre flax industry to provide a consistent supply of high-quality fibres and fibre by-products to support our culture sector. We intervene in existing systems of textiles and fashion production to initiate change through sustainable fibre-to-fabric value chains. Our approach includes five objectives: Reduce barriers for Nova Scotians who wish to access locally produced and sustainable textiles and clothing, as well as natural building materials, such as flaxcrete and bio-charGenerate local, green jobs across the agriculture, craft, and building sectors that are in line with principles of the circular economy Contribute to a broader long-term shift toward buying local and removing virgin polyester and synthetic fibres from entering Nova Scotia and ending up in our waste streamGenerate sharable knowledge to support climate change adaptation in Our research is guided by a novel systems design approach called Transition Design. Through transition design, we have defined the wicked problem facing Nova Scotians as:&nbsp;A global supply chain for textile materials has displaced the local production of fibres and textiles. Through this research, we have produced a series of maps which visualize the complex nature of the problem facing our region as we work toward defining a shared vision for its resolution.&nbsp; Methodology Transition Design is an approach used to address systemic, interconnected, and complex problems that manifest in context-specific ways. These kinds of problems tend to transcend disciplinary, sectoral, and often geographical borders. Transition Design uses the term “wicked problem” to denote a problem that cannot be solved by one solution, one person, or even by one type of expertise. Rather, it exists within a complex network of issues, some of which may not seem related at first glance. The Transition Design approach uses community engagement sessions to gather anecdotal evidence from people on the ground engaged in and experiencing the problem. The goal is to understand the complexity of the wicked problem, to reveal where interventions should be situated.&nbsp; The Flaxmobile Project would like to acknowledge the support of Terry Irwin and Gideon Kossoff from The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. Irwin and Kossoff collaborated with the Flaxmobile in an advisory capacity to assist in the process of working with transition design as a methodology in our research project. Our process and maps are adapted from Irwin and Kossoff: The Transition Design Approach.&nbsp; Community Engagement Sessions The Flaxmobile Project convened several community engagement sessions to identify and gather a range of viewpoints from the community related to the development of a local textiles industry. We invited farmers, fibre processors, craftspeople, sustainable fashion companies, reseachers, economic development officers, and culture and heritage organizations, living and working along the textile supply chain in Nova Scotia to take part in the study. The community engagement sessions took place in St. Ann’s, Cape Breton on December 12, 2023, in Truro on March 25, 2024, and in Halifax on May 27, 2024. The following video was prepared to give participants a sense of what to expect from the daylong event. community engagement sessions encompassed feedback from over eighty participants across eleven community groups. Over a period of eight months, the Flaxmobile research team compiled and analyzed the data to define emergent themes and create system maps. This exhibition,&nbsp;curated by Kirstie McCallum, was first displayed at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts from November 12 to December 15, 2024, before moving to the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design from January 27 to March 22, 2025. Flax Ecologies delves into the intricate relationships between plants, land, and human communities, underscoring the vital role of ecology in fostering sustainable futures. &nbsp; The craftspeople featured in Flax Ecologies are: Andreea Murgu, Anita Cazzola, Frances Dorsey, Gabriel Soligo, Heidi Friesen, Juliana Naccarato, Kamila Orbegoso and Caora McKenna, Katelan Lahey, Kit Holden-Ada, Kristi Farrier, Larissa Korol, Laura Hambleton, Tamara Winsor, Wiebke Schroeder, and Samantha Read. These artists come from diverse, multidisciplinary backgrounds, including textile artists, ceramicists, installation artists, jewelers, leatherworkers, metalsmiths, papermakers, photographers, sewists, and woodworkers. Many have skillfully blended multiple specialties, transforming the limited supply of flax into a wide array of art objects. Through their creations, they demonstrate the many ways this resilient and beautiful plant can be integrated into various artistic, craft, and design traditions. Flax Ecologies highlights how our lives are enriched by cultivating creativity within deep social and geographical connections. It presents a hopeful vision for the future—one that prioritizes care for local communities and ecosystems in the creation and exchange of goods. This future values local materials and recognizes the creative expressions that arise from them as vital indicators of our collective wellbeing. ︎ Read more about the Craftspeople Featured ArtworkIn 2023, the craftspeople showcased below were each paired with a farm that provided them with materials for their work. By witnessing and participating in the cultivation process, they developed close relationships with farmers and the flax plant. Each artwork in the exhibition reflects its maker’s sustained meditation on the aesthetic pleasures of working with flax in its many forms. They have been challenged to adapt to the innate qualities of the plant, through colour, form, and texture, as they explore how the material can best express their vision. Flax fibre is not only the raw material; it is a source of inspiration, a dynamic entity with which the artists have been in dialogue throughout the creation process. Located in Canning, Nova Scotia, The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts (RCCA) is a hub for artistic learning, creative experimentation, and presentation. RCCA was both a participant and supporter of the Flaxmobile Project, growing their own flax in years one and two and providing a gathering space for farmers and craftspeople in years two and three. In addition to hosting the premiere of the Flax Ecologies exhibition, RCCA facilitated a weekend retreat for farmers, hosted a communal dinner for farmers, handspinners, processors, and artists, and provided a residency space for artists who experimented with the resulting fibres. Based in Sydney, Nova Scotia, The Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design (CBCCD) is a for impact charitable organization and a leading force in the educational, promotional, and economic development of the craft sector in Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island). CBCCD provides community leadership in sustainable craft in Cape Breton, connecting diverse rural and remote communities that are rooted in&nbsp;strong craft traditions. In addition to sharing their knowledge and expertise&nbsp;with The Flaxmobile, they hosted Flax&nbsp;Ecologies exhibition&nbsp;in 2025, and their staff have been an essential support throughout With a background in music, his research explores cyclical composition as a means to enact speculative, emergent pedagogies. His resesrch-creation challenges traditional educational models by fostering an adaptable approach that emphasizes the decolonization of art, composition, and performance. In addition to his graduate research at NSCAD University, Dan has collaborated as an arranger and engineer with artists such as Dorothea Paas (Telephone Explosion Records), Jasmyn (ANTI-Records), and Julianna Riolino (You’ve Changed Records).
